ROOTS- EUDR Traceability
ROOTS is an ingenious standard that aims at ensuring sustainability through the supply chain. The ROOTS-GIPL EUDR Verification Standard is intended for entities seeking to demonstrate compliance towards responsible sourcing requirements for commodities namely wood, palm oil, soy, cattle (Leather), cocoa, coffee and rubber. It provides a verification process designed to confirm that commodities and products meet requirements of legality, deforestation-free production, and responsible trade throughout the supply chain.
This Standard ensures that commodities verified under the ROOTS-GIPL EUDR Verification Program are in alignment with both Indian regulatory requirements and international market regulations, including the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) – Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR, now repealed), and the United States Lacey Act. The Standard may also be applied to products verified under other credible legality or deforestation-free standards, subject to mutual recognition by GIPL India Pvt. Ltd.
The transformation of commodities from their origin (forest or agricultural land) to finished products involves multiple actors assuming legal ownership and responsibility at different stages of the supply chain. Each entity making a ROOTS-GIPL EUDR Verification claim shall be assessed by GIPL India Pvt. Ltd. for conformance with the principles and requirements of this Standard.
Entities that may seek verification under this Standard include, but are not limited to:
- Farmers and Plantation Managers
- Harvesters and Loggers
- Depots, Consolidators and traders
- Primary Processors such as sawmills, pulp & paper mills, oil mills, or processing plants
- Secondary Processor
- Merchants & Exporters
Fulfilment of this Standard demonstrates an organization’s ability to provide products that are verified as legal, deforestation-free, and responsibly traded, thereby offering assurance to customers, regulators, and international markets of compliance with the EUDR, Lacey Act, Indian laws, and other applicable regulatory frameworks.
